Women in Professional Kitchens

July 23 2012 – Robert Fiumara

Historically speaking, while women reigned in the home kitchens, the professional kitchens were ruled by men.  Even with the rise in female celebrity chefs it is still a prevalent thought that men are “chefs” and women are merely “cooks”.  What is so interesting about this is that many famous male chefs will thank their mothers for getting them started on their culinary career. So why the double standard?

It has been said that while women may possess the necessary skill with food to be successful cooks, they do not possess the ambition, or the level headedness to run a busy, professional kitchen. There has even been the theory that men are better able to experiment with new and unusual flavor combinations because women have been thought to be too timid with their palate.

However, in recent years the number of female professional chefs has skyrocketed. Well known women like Iron Chef Cat Cora (who is also the executive chef of Bon Appetit Magazine), owner and executive chef at the screamingly successful New York restaurant Butter, Alex Guarnaschelli, and Stephanie Izard (the first and, to date, only female winner of the highly popular cooking competition show, Top Chef) have blown those preconceived notions out of the water. They are proving that women are just as good at being effective leaders in professional kitchens as men.

Because there has been a rapid upswing in women entering the professional level of the culinary arts, the designers of culinary apparel have been a little slow to catch up.  Women have been complaining about oversized, bulky chef jackets and chef pants that are tailored to a taller professional. Finding professional culinary attire that accommodates the heat of busy kitchens has not been easy.

Fortunately, it is becoming more common to see culinary apparel in a wider array of sizes and styles that can accommodate both men and women. As the culinary world expands it is welcoming chefs based on talent and skill and not by gender.  If you’re looking to dress your chefs, male and female in some of the most professional, stylish and comfortable uniforms on the market, visit Fiumara Apparel  and our vast array of affordable, quality selections.
