Summer Camps with a Culinary Twist

May 15 2015 – Robert Fiumara

Are you a frazzled parent looking for an exciting, yet educational, camp to send your children to this summer?  Have a child that’s expressed an interest in the culinary field or likes to cook as a hobby?  We have a list of camps that just might be a good choice for your family and even one option for the adults!

First up, is the International Culinary Center’s Summer Cooking Camp for Teens, in NYC!  This is an intense summer camp aimed at teens aged 13 to 18, who have expressed an interested in furthering their culinary skills.  With a total of five weekday sessions covering everything from pastries to basic cooking skills, this camp will give your teen a chance to learn the basics of the kitchen at an early age.  The camp also covers kitchen safety and you chef will participate in hands-on cooking in each of the classrooms.  At the completion of the camp, each student will leave with a sense of confidence that they can handle their own in the kitchen, a set of professional quality knives, and their very own chef uniform!

In Vermont, kids are able to participate in a residential summer cooking camp for children ten and older.  Offering one and two week sessions, this camps tuition includes a knives kit, chef uniform, cake decorating kit, and diploma at the completion of the camp.  Residential students will also receive meals, accommodations, and a sleeping bag included with their tuition!  Children will learn a variety of cooking skills including menu planning, beef and poultry cooking, seafood, and so much more!  The camp held by the Kids’ Culinary Academy of Vermont takes place in Highgate, Vermont while a Day Camp is available for residents of Cocoa Beach, Florida.

If you’re a resident of the West Coast, you can send your kids to camp in Los Angeles, California with Chef Eric’s Culinary Classroom! For ages 7 to 15, this camp will provide instruction on a variety of topics that you can choose from including pastry camp and baking.  Your child will be paired with student chef’s who are around the same age and each day will be filled with fun activities as the children are introduced to a variety of kitchen skills and safety procedures.

In case all this talk of summer camp has the kid in you excited, there are also a number of cooking camps for adults!  The Culinary Institute of America holds a Culinary Boot Camp in three locations:  Hyde Park, NY, St. Helena, CA, and San Antonio, TX.  Choose from two, three, four, or five day camps to learn all about food and wine from expert chef’s, in the same professional kitchens that they learned in.  With expert instruction and a learn-as-you-go approach, these boot camps are perfect for adults who are curious about the culinary field or just want to improve their own cooking skills!
